The Ten Best Gifts for Writers

With the holidays coming up, you might be wondering what kind of gifts to get for your writer friends. Writers can be a strange bunch. What others might find nerdy or boring, most writers will find amusing or extremely useful. I’ve asked a few of my writer friends what their favorite writing-themed gifts are and threw in a few of my own.

  1. Pens – Writers are always writing, and what better way to encourage their writing process than to supply them with the tool they use the most? Get them a package of quality pens, or better yet, find out their favorite pen and get a package of those.
  2. Notebook – Most writers write something by hand, even if they type their WIPs on a computer or laptop. A beautiful notebook can go a long way in inspiring the words to flow.
  3. Coffee Mug/Tea Cup – A mug for their favorite beverage. Inspiration, quotes, and bookish or writing themes will always be a writing-crowd pleaser.
  4. AquaNotes – For most people, our best thoughts occur to us in the shower. This is no different for writers, so a place to write down story ideas, characters, or plot twists that come to mind while in the shower would be a great thing to get a writer!
  5. Audible Subscription – As important as reading is for writers, sitting down with a book can take up valuable writing time. Audible makes it easy to “read” hands-free, so your writer friend can read their favorite books while driving or running, and still have time to sit down and write later.
  6. Bananagrams – Word games are always useful and fun to writers. Playing games like Bananagrams or Scrabble are great ways to get the wheels turning and the words flowing.
  7. How-to Write books – You can never go wrong with a book on the craft or business of writing. There is always so much to learn, and I bet your writer friend will devour these books and soak up every ounce of information they can.
  8. Bookish Swag – One of the far more “nerdy” gifts on this list may just be one of the most appreciated. Whether you find bags, clothing, buttons, figurines, or stickers, your writer friend will love book-related swag.
  9. Books – Since reading is such a huge part of improving the writing craft and most writers also love to read, you can never go wrong with getting your writer friend a book. Just ask them if they are looking for a particular book, and I bet you’ll get plenty of suggestions!
  10. Quill and Tome’s Writer’s Planner – I use this planner every day to keep my writing and publishing life on track. Your writer friend will find so much inspiration and ability to track their writing and author business in The Writer’s Planner!

What are some great writer-friendly gifts you’ve come across? Share them with us in the comments!
